Reinventing Infrastructure Data Management: The OpsMill Story

OpsMill was born from hard-earned experience.

Co-founders Damien Garros and Raphael Maunier spent years in the trenches of large-scale infrastructure, facing the same frustrations that still hold teams back today: fragile automation stacks, brittle scripts that don’t scale, disconnected tooling, and scattered data.

Again and again, they saw promising automation efforts stall—not because of bad ideas but because the underlying data was unreliable, unstructured, or simply too hard to work with.

Every project started with the same questions: Where’s the real data? How stale is it? Who owns it? Can I trust it enough to automate?

From frustration to first principles

Damien’s journey started at Juniper, where he developed Ansible-based automation and built the first collector to consume Juniper’s streaming telemetry. It quickly became clear to him how important it was for data to have context.

At Apstra, Damien got his first exposure to full-stack automation platforms. That’s where he saw first-hand that if humans and tools were going to share a system, version control was essential.

Later, at Roblox, he built and connected a full automation stack, including observability and a custom source of truth. He experimented with bringing version control into the mix but it wasn’t a priority for the team and he never had time to take it all the way.

The turning point came at Network to Code, where Damien worked extensively with NetBox and Nautobot. He kept running into the same core tool limitations: rigid schemas, no built-in versioning, and constant tradeoffs between extensibility and maintainability.

That’s when an idea began to take root.

What if you could apply Git-style version control inside a database? What if you had full schema flexibility and the integrity and safety of a peer-reviewed CI pipeline?

That idea crystallized the day Damien discovered the open-source Noms project, a database with native Git-like capabilities. It wasn’t perfect but it proved the concept. From there, the vision for Infrahub took off.

The platform we wished we had

Damien and Raphael founded OpsMill, and assembled a team of seasoned infrastructure engineers who’d also experienced the data struggle first-hand. Together, they scoped and built the system they’d always wanted: a customizable, testable, and versioned foundation for infrastructure automation.

Launched in late 2024, Infrahub is a graph-based data management platform with built-in version control, CI workflows, peer review, and API access, purpose-built to power reliable infrastructure automation at scale.

Open by design

We believe infrastructure automation should be built on open foundations. That’s why Infrahub has been open source from day one. We want to foster a community of builders, share what we’ve learned, and create a space where ideas grow into durable tools.

Our otter mascot is a nod to the open source project that first inspired Damien. Otto also speaks to our belief that small, well-crafted systems can have a big impact, just as otters are a keystone species in their ecosystem.

Our work isn’t finished. We’re growing and evolving every day, together with our community.

But our mission has been clear since our founding in 2023: Give engineers a strong data management platform to unleash the full power of infrastructure automation.
